People say wealth without health is not real wealth, because in the end if we want to enjoy wealth to the fullest, we still need to be healthy. No matter from which cultural points of view we see health and sickness, it transcends all humans that health is something very valuable. Thus, taking care of our health should always be one of the priorities in life.

If we are in our prime in life and can independently make choices for ourselves, taking part in activities that can help to foster and maintain health can be the best investment for our future. Then, why not pick for ourselves a musical instrument to play? Do you know that playing musical instrument as an ongoing activity can promote our health? There are a few music course in Singapore that caters to people of all ages. Let’s check out what others know about the health benefits of playing instruments.

We begin with what Bell Music had published in their blog on the health aspects of playing musical instruments.

Keep the blood pressure low by playing musical instrument

Music has been linked to lower blood pressure, lower levels of stress and a lower heart rate according to Suzanne Hanser of the Music Therapy department at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, who continues on to say “There is also increasing evidence that making music enhances the immunological response, which enables us to fight viruses”. Facing life today chock-full of stress had caused many people to suffer from high blood pressure. Knowing that playing musical instrument can help lower it, why not join the bandwagon of musical instrument players early on before the illness sets in. Other than that, it can help to lower your heart rate, which can affect your health in tremendous ways and prevent potential heart diseases. Your heart will be working more efficiently pumping blood to every corner of your body.

Not only that, playing musical instrument can increase the defense system of our body. Our immune system will be stronger and thus make us less fallible to common sicknesses such as flu, fever and such. This will contribute to better productivity and more satisfaction with life generally. While our hands and feet are trying to be in harmony with the required movements of playing musical instruments, our whole body are enjoying the melodious sounds and at the same time building its health. It is so amazing to think about!

Peggy Giakoumelos shared an interesting piece on SBS News. It tells about how playing musical instrument can help the seniors to maintain their health.

Strengthen your hand muscles, seniors!

“So what I wanted to do was a research study looking at people over the age of 65 to see if they could learn to play the piano over a period of six weeks and how that would help their hand function in daily life.”

After a six-week course of music lessons earlier this year, Dr MacRitiche looked at how the lessons affected hand function in daily life and said the results were positive.

“They did show increases in their processing speed being able to do tasks a little bit faster and we also saw that the connection between their brain and their hand muscles was a lot stronger,” she said. Read more here!

It is very common for the seniors to feel restricted by their declining ability related to fine and gross motor movements. Their joints are becoming more stiff and the muscles weaker due to hormonal changes and process of ageing. This is where and how playing musical instruments can help the seniors.

Due to the practice involved when playing musical instruments, the hand muscles can be strengthened and that helps the seniors to move their hands and fingers more comfortably to do other ordinary daily activities. There are of course many other health benefits for the seniors, but being able to move about freely with less pain and discomfort is already a major relief for them.

Let us read another article on Psychology Today written by Christopher Bergland to know what it says about the health benefit of playing musical instrument.

Your brain needs to be healthy too, and playing musical instrument does help

“All these findings ultimately could lead to improved therapies for people with brain injuries or learning disabilities,” Schlaug said. Adding, “Music might provide an alternative access into a broken or dysfunctional system within the brain. Music has the unique ability to go through alternative channels and connect different sections of the brain.”

The brain can be affected when it gets injured for example due to accident or stroke. When the brain is affected, the whole life of a person changed. It is not easy to look after a brain-injured patient, because the process of recovery can stretch for many years. Musical therapy involving playing of musical instrument is an alternative to medical and other types of treatment available.

By playing musical instrument, the brain can be trained to be active again and the benefits can be likened to giving physiotherapy to the body parts involved in physio treatment. The word amazing is not enough to describe all the health benefits that playing musical instrument can give to us. But merely reading this article does not suffice and can produce no health effect. Pick one instrument today and start to play! See for yourself how it changes your life for the better.
